Many parents may notice signs of Autism in their infants even before their first birthday. Although children without the condition often show similar behavior, it is important to consult with a pediatrician or family doctor if there are signs of developmental delays. An early diagnosis will lead to an increased outcome for your child. Here are 7 signs your infant may have autism:
1. Poor Eye Contact
Eye contact is a source of the earliest possible indication of Autism. Most infants begin making eye contact at 3 months old. If your infant fails to make eye contact by 6 months of age, you should consult with an expert.
2. Delays in Motor Development
Babies are expected to roll over by themselves between 4 and 7 months and to crawl between 6 and 10 months. During these same periods, babies start to reach and grab for objects around them. Lack or delay of these motor skills may be red flags.
3. Unusual Body Movement
A child at risk for autism might move their hands, fingers, or other body parts in an odd and repetitive manner. Some examples are: arm flapping, stiffening arms and/or legs, and twisting of wrists.
4. Delayed babbling
At around 9 to 12 months, infants usually begin “baby talk”, or cooing. Delays in babbling is not common and so it serves as a good indicator of Autism. Babies who take longer to babble usually have language delays.
5. Rare Imitation
Imitation begins in infancy by copying the caregiver’s actions, gestures, sounds, and words. It is when the baby begins to show interest in the caregiver for social reasons rather than just basic needs (like food or sleep). Children with autism find imitation to be difficult.
6.Unresponsive to Name
By 12 months, infants begin to respond to their name. If your child fails to respond, it may be a marker for Autism due to delays in language.
7. Lack of gesturing
Infants gesture towards objects and people to communicate with those around them. If you notice your baby does not gesture towards anything, it may be a delay in social skills and a sign of Autism.
