Every parent experiences stress. But being the parent of a child with Autism is a 24/7 job that takes center stage in your life. You are your child’s teacher, cheerleader, therapist, and friend. Your child’s needs often become most important, above your family, friends, and yourself. This unconditional love can sometimes be more destructive than edifying for yourself, your child, and everyone around you. Here are some tips to help you as you love and parent your autistic child:
Self Care
One of the most important things to do is to take care of yourself first. Without self care, you cannot be the best version of yourself to your autistic child. Neglecting to rest and doing the things you love will lead to a great frustration which can often be taken out on your child.
Ask for help
You do not have to feel like the future of your child depends solely on you. Ask your family and closest friends to help you along as you try your best to parent your child. Find a few responsibilities you can delegate to others in your household to take some of the load off you.
Enjoy Quality Time
When you have calmer days with your child, cherish and enjoy them with the rest of your family and friends. Watch a movie or spend the day at the park with those closest to you.
Find a support group
Knowing that you are not the only one struggling to parent an autistic child can be so relieving. A support group with other autistic parents can allow you to share and ventilate your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with others. Coming together will also allow you to grow alongside those who are able to fully empathize with you.
