Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be recognized in the early stages of child development. This enables children to be diagnosed and receive vital early intervention services at a much younger age. Young children who demonstrate late language emergence (LLE) may demonstrate similar communication characteristics and deficits as their peers with ASD. Differentiating ASD from LLE is essential for proper diagnosis and therapeutic intervention for both populations. This presentation will discuss the current research in early diagnosis of ASD and the commonalities and differences among their peers with LLE.
1. Attendees will identify the similarities in communication characteristics and deficits between young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their peers with late language emergence (LLE).
2. Attendees will describe assessment procedures necessary to accurately diagnose and distinguish between young children with ASD and their peers who demonstrate LLE.
3. Attendees will identify research-based teaching methodologies for young children with ASD and those who demonstrate LLE.
