Abstract:
Language development for individuals with autism spectrum disorder requires multiple techniques to assist in the acquisition and generalization of language skills across various environments. Evidence-based teaching strategies based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis will be presented.

Abstract:
This presentation is especially relevant for clinicians working in school-based or team-based delivery models where consistency and clarity in goal development are essential. Attendees will learn how to operationally define language targets, link them to functional communication needs, and apply those definitions within individualized education plans (IEPs), subjective, objective, assessment, plan (SOAP) notes, and related documentation formats. Practical strategies for writing measurable and observable communication goals that are functional across clinical and educational settings will be presented with an emphasis on aligning applied behavior analysis (ABA) methodologies with speech-language pathology practices.

Abstract:
This presentation will target the bridging of both the mastery of shaping procedures by the behavior analyst and the language development expertise of the speech pathologist to increase positive outcomes for the individuals we serve. Response shaping, chaining, reinforcement schedules and strategies to promote natural language development will be discussed. The literature will be reviewed throughout the presentation and there will be discussion of balancing increasing expressive language with the acknowledgement of language norms.

Abstract:
This course will present evidence-based prompting and prompt-fading strategies based on the science of applied behavior analysis. Phonemic prompting and prompt-fading techniques to increase acquisition of age-appropriate developmental sounds and word production will also be presented. A side-by-side look at prompting hierarchies and their role in learning will be discussed along with effective collaboration between the behavior analyst and speech pathologist to achieve the best student outcomes.
