Currently, there is no medical test that can diagnose Autism. The diagnosis is reached by evaluating behavior. Physicians and Psychologists who have been trained to evaluate autistic-specific behaviors decide if a child is Autistic. There are many different ways these trained professionals can come to their decision.
Developmental Screening
A short test to tell if children have any delays in learning basic skills. The doctor performing the screening may ask the parents some questions and/or directly interact with the child to observe if any development delays are present.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation
In addition to evaluating the child’s behavior and development and interviewing the parents, a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation may also include a hearing and vision screening, genetic testing, neurological testing, and other medical testing.
Medical History Interview
A doctor will ask the parents general questions about the child’s development progress. Such questions may include whether or not the child has begun pointing to objects to show their parents something or makes any eye contact with people around them.
Clinical Observations
A doctor will observe the child for any delays in development. As they observe, they may also ask the parents if certain behaviors that are observed are typical for the child to engage in.
Developmental and Intelligence Tests
These tests can be given to evaluate whether a child's developmental delays affect his or her ability to think and make decisions.
